Picture a 23 year old touching down at Buffalo International for the first time ever, tasked with moving from his beloved NYC for a long-term work project in the city. Is he upset? Frustrated? Drained from moving? Burned out? All of the above? Now bear in mind that coming from NYC this 23 year old had never owned a car, due to the plentiful public transport available back home. Unfortunately for Buffalo this is one of many cities across the nation constricted by highways and suffocated by wide boulevards unfriendly to pedestrians. Thus this 23 year old needed a car in order to work, thus a "Point A to Point B" vehicle was required.I stumbled into River Auto in mid August. The reviews were reasonable, and having had no experience buying a car in my life I happened to be walking by it and decided to "pop in". The office was homey, and a friendly man called Tommy showed me a 2017 Ford Escape with 100,000 miles for a little under $10,000. "Ten grand!", I thought, "this surely cannot be a good deal". I took the CarFax back home to my family where I was told that the deal was actually reasonable. I am a stubborn person, and thus proceeded to dilly dally in the hopes of finding a better deal in this city.I spent the next 2 weeks driving around a u-haul at first and a rental subsequently, going from work to dealerships and all the logistical hellscapes one finds themself in during a move. This by itself set me back at least $1,000. I went back to River Auto once again, where they had of course already sold the Ford Escape, but they had a 2019 Chevy Trax that was in the same sort of budget area. Still, I visited a host of dealerships, picking out a 2014 Equinox and even considering out of state options (there was a newer Jeep Renegade with a clean CarFax for sale in Mass. that I heavily considered). But the more cars I saw the clearer the choice became. The Trax was newer than others, had less mileage than others, no accidents and ticked enough boxes for me to pull the trigger on a "3rd Party Inspector". This was performed at the River Auto facility with a person from LemonSquad who found no issues. Tommy, to his credit, had no qualms with this inspection.I ended up paying what I consider from my research on Kelley Blue Book and others to be a fair deal for the Trax. I was a bit nervous sitting in the room with Brian, who I think was the "head honcho", trying to negotiate a deal for this car. It ended up only very slightly marked down, but given how terrible the used car market as a whole is I have no doubt that the car would have easily sold for the ticket price relatively quickly. They had no trouble receiving payment from the 5 different methods I needed to get them the money (I paid cash), and I drove it off the lot the next day.The moniker of "used car salesman" is often considered unfriendly. People picture duplicitous men selling snake oil and laughing about it after. While my experience of buying a car was indeed tiring, I expended too much effort on frivolous activities when I could have just stuck with the first dealership I walked into in Buffalo. Tommy was great, told it like it was, and was more than happy to take the first picture of me with my first car. I will of course update this review if it turns out this car is a complete dud but I have been impressed with it in the short amount of time I have owned it.
